The Republic P-47C was the first variant of the Thunderbolt to be deployed for combat operations in Europe. Significant improvements over the B-model included a slightly longer fuselage to improve ground handling and a revised engine mount to reduce vibration. To address the critical need for longer range during bomber escort missions, the P-47C was equipped with a 200-gallon ferry tank (often a paper-based or metal pressurized tank). This allowed the “Jug” to accompany B-17s and B-24s deeper into occupied territory, fundamentally changing the air war over Germany.
