The Republic P-47B was the first production version of the Thunderbolt to enter service with the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in 1942. It established the classic “razorback” silhouette and was built around the massive Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine paired with a sophisticated turbosupercharger system in the rear fuselage. While later variants saw more combat, the P-47B was the aircraft that proved the concept of the heavy, high-altitude escort fighter. It was used extensively for pilot training and tactical evaluation, paving the way for the P-47C and the famous P-47D.
