The Republic P-43B and P-43C were specialized developments of the Lancer designed for photographic reconnaissance. To maximize their high-altitude performance, these variants were equipped with various camera installations in the rear fuselage. While the Lancer was being phased out of frontline fighter roles, its turbosupercharged engine made it an ideal platform for overflying enemy territory at altitudes where most interceptors could not reach. These aircraft served with the USAAF and were also supplied to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) to provide critical intelligence during the early stages of the war in the Pacific.
