The Republic P-43A Lancer was an improved version of the standard P-43, featuring armor protection and leak-proof fuel tanks for combat operations. In 1941, over 100 P-43As were delivered to the Chinese Air Force via the Lend-Lease program. Though often outmatched by highly maneuverable Japanese fighters, the P-43A was valued by Chinese pilots for its incredible high-altitude performance and its ability to withstand significant battle damage. It served as a critical stopgap fighter until more advanced aircraft like the P-40 and P-51 became available in the theater.
