The Curtiss-Wright CW-21B was an improved version of the lightweight Demon interceptor. The “B” model introduced several significant changes, most notably a new landing gear that retracted flush into the wing (eliminating the fairings of the CW-21A) and a revised fuselage. The most famous deployment of the CW-21B was with the Military Aviation of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (ML-KNIL). Despite their lightweight construction, they were formidable climbers and fought gallantly against superior Japanese forces during the invasion of Java.
