The Republic P-43B Lancer was a dedicated photographic reconnaissance conversion of the P-43A. By removing the standard armament and installing a suite of cameras in the rear fuselage, the P-43B capitalized on its Pratt & Whitney R-1830-49 turbosupercharged engine. This allowed the aircraft to operate at altitudes above 30,000 feet—well beyond the effective reach of most early-war interceptors. These “Photo-Lancers” provided vital intelligence for the USAAF in the Pacific and were also operated by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during the critical early years of World War II.
