The Savoia-Marchetti S.55 was a double-hull flying boat produced in Italy beginning in 1924. It featured many innovative design elements, including thick cantilever wings that contained the fuel tanks and the passenger/crew accommodations within the twin hulls. The S.55A variant was a military version powered by Fiat A.24R engines. The aircraft achieved worldwide fame for its record-breaking transatlantic flights, most notably the 1933 mass crossing of 24 S.55s from Orbetello to Chicago, led by Italo Balbo.
